“Sustaining Ourselves Through Subsistence Farming” |
Food For The Poor Guyana Inc is currently working in with the Guyana Prison on a number of projects under the theme “Sustaining Ourselves Through Subsistence Farming”. These Projects are geared towards providing financial assistance to the prison and ensuring that the Prison carries out its mandate of rehabilitation.
This initiative is being undertaken because Food For The Poor Guyana Inc have realised that because of budgetary constraints the Prison Service is limited in its efforts to carry out its mandate. These projects will also contribute to the financial needs of the prison. With an economy that is now recuperating from the 2005 floods that devastated the Coastline resulting in the loss of millions of dollars worth of Agricultural produces, the Guyana Government is unable to sufficiently maintain the Guyana Prison Service.
Currently we have two ongoing projects:
1. The rearing of 3000 broilers at the New Amsterdam Prison
2. The planting of fruit trees and vegetables at the Lusignan Prison.
Under the New Amsterdam project a brand new 100ft X 30ft chicken coup is being constructed. Funding is also being made available for the procurement of the Three Thousand (3000) baby chicks, feeds, antibiotics and vitamins. The total cost of this project is Three million Two Hundred and seventy – Two Thousand Five Hundred and Thirty Five Dollars - $3,272,535.00 (Guy) or $16,362.00 (US).
Under the Lusignan Prison project an 80ft by 40ft fence is being constructed. Funding is also being made available for the procurement of garden tools, fertiliser, insecticide, seeds and seedlings.
The project is being carried out at a cost of Two Hundred and Fifty Six Thousand, Six hundred and seventy Guyana dollars ($256,670) or One Thousand Two hundred and Eighty Four (US) dollars ($1284).
