In August 2022, Food For The Poor (Guy) Inc donated one hundred and eight (108) units of simple tools to the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) to boost their Agricultural Self-Sufficiency Program. Seven months later, these tools have made a major impact on the GPS Agricultural Self-Sufficiency Program. Because of these tools, the GPS Agricultural Self-Sufficiency Program was able to reap on average, a combined total of 1941 kg of vegetables and fruits.
The tools donated were hoes with handles, pickaxes, forks, machetes, shovel squares with handles, spades, and triangular files. Because of the contribution made by FFTP (Guy) Inc., the Guyana Prison Service’s Agriculture program had a very productive first quarter in 2023. A total of 698 kilograms of Pak Choy, 666 pounds of Boulanger, 577 pounds of Bora, and other vegetables and fruits were harvested across various farming locations.
According to Mr. Patrick Perry, Chief Prison Officer and Office in Charge of the Agricultural department, the tools donated have made a major impact in the preparation of the land. He explained that, if FFTP (Guy) Inc had not donated these tools they would not be able to produce such excellent figures in their first quarter of the year.
“The tools are currently being used in the land preparation of the crops.”. “We use cutlasses for crop maintenance, and the rest of the tools come in handy as we don’t have to purchase anything since we have them within reach, ” Perry shared. Perry also related that the tools are of excellent quality and reiterated that they have aided in land preparation, which is a major factor in crop production.
Farming is done at the New Amsterdam, Mazaruni, Lusignan, and Timehri prisons.
At FFTP (Guy) Inc, our agricultural programs and projects are geared towards increased production and improved cultivation through the introduction of climate-smart agriculture.
Food For The Poor (Guy) Inc continues to play a pivotal role in the development of Guyana.
