On Thursday, March 30, 2023, Food For The Poor (Guy) Inc. handed over two industrial sewing machines to Wisburg Secondary School. The simple ceremony was held at the school’s compound at Wisroc Park, Wismar, Linden, Region 10, in their Home Economics department.

At the handing-over ceremony, speaking on behalf of Food For The Poor (Guy) Inc was Senior Projects Associate, Ms. Valini Leitch, who reminded the school that the organization does not only donate food items but aids in the positive changes in life. “As soon as we heard the news, we at Food For the Poor (Guy) Inc. sprung into action and decided that we will boost the capacity of the children of Wisburg Secondary by committing to two industrial sewing machines. One week later in keeping with the vision of Food For The Poor (Guy) Inc. we delivered as promised,” Leitch posited.

Acting Deputy Headmistress Mrs. Sheon Bynoe explained that the sewing machines will impact the school and the department greatly. She related that the students are currently working with one machine, as the other one is not working properly. Bynoe clarified that with the speedy response from Food For The Poor (Guy) Inc., the Clothing and Textiles department will be able to have a greater influence.

Also, sharing her views was the head of The Home Economics Department, Ms. Rhonella Paul, who stated that her department was elated. She conveyed that the department is appreciative to Food For The Poor (Guy) Inc. for the excellent gesture, as this will boost the department’s capacity. “I want to thank Food For The Poor (Guy) Inc. for this, and we are hoping and looking forward to more kind gestures, ” Paul shared.
The head of the department noted that before FFTP’s intervention, three students would have to share one sewing machine. But with two more added to their arsenal, the department will have an easier flow when conducting classes.

Kelly Ann McKinnon, a fifth-form student who is also a part of the Clothing and Textiles department, thanked Food For The Poor (Guy) Inc. for donating the sewing machines. She divulged that it will better assist her because she will no longer have to wait to use the one machine that functioned.

Previously, the organization met with the head teacher of the school, Mrs. Colleen Michael-Joseph, and staff who related that the school was in dire need of sewing machines since they offer Clothing and Textile at the CSEC level. Mrs. Joseph revealed that due to a lack of sewing machines, students could not prepare for exams or do practical exercises. Added to this, Mrs. Joseph noted that the school was not equipped with adequate machines to cater to a total of four hundred and fifty-three (453) students from grades 7 to 11.
