Food For the Poor (Guyana) has strengthened the Long Creek Health Center with a generous donation of healthcare, food, and baby supplies. The donation, which includes baby diapers, flour, cornmeal, canned lentils, a blood pressure monitor, linens, an examination table, baby kits, 2 hospital beds and mattresses, canned vegetables, crutches, walkers, canes, sanitary napkins, IV poles, rice and children’s clothing will significantly enhance the center’s capacity to serve the surrounding communities.
At the simple handing-over ceremony held yesterday October 15th FFTP’s CEO, Ms. Andrea Benjamin, emphasized the alignment of this initiative with the organization’s mission. “This contribution reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting families and communities, particularly in rural areas. By strengthening rural health facilities, we are improving living conditions and fostering sustainable development in underserved communities.”
Ms. Benjamin also highlighted the challenges faced by rural communities, including limited access to healthcare services, inadequate infrastructure, and shortages of essential medical supplies. She noted that improving these health facilities helps ensure quality care for vulnerable populations, reducing illness, improving well-being, and contributing to the long-term development of these communities.
Dr. Elber Borrego, the doctor in charge at Long Creek Health Center, expressed his gratitude for the timely support. He shared that the center serves over 5,000 people from various communities along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway and is the main healthcare facility in the area. This donation will help the center better meet the healthcare needs of these communities.
One key aspect of the donation is the inclusion of baby diapers, part of FFTP’s Diaper Program for Health Centers, which encourages rural mothers to bring their babies to the clinic without worrying about access to diapers. This thoughtful initiative will help ensure that babies receive the medical attention they need during clinic visits.
The donation marks another significant step in Food For the Poor (Guyana)’s ongoing efforts to uplift rural communities by providing vital support and resources for improved healthcare access.
