In a continued effort to promote education and skill development, Food For the Poor (Guyana) has extended support to two secondary schools in Linden, Region 10—Harmony Secondary and Wisburg Secondary. These schools received vital items to enhance their Home Economics departments, helping to equip students with essential life skills. This initiative reflects Food For the Poor’s alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to quality education and gender equality.
At a simple ceremony held for the handover, Mrs. Serena Knights-Alleyne, Administrative Manager of Food For the Poor (Guyana), highlighted the organization’s commitment to fostering educational opportunities. She stated, “At Food For the Poor (Guyana), we believe that education is a cornerstone for development, empowerment, and change.”
The Home Economics departments at both Harmony and Wisburg Secondary schools play a critical role in preparing students for real-world challenges by teaching skills such as cooking, sewing, and household management. These donations are expected to bolster the learning experience, providing students with better resources to engage in hands-on activities and develop competencies that will serve them throughout their lives.
This gesture also aligns with the broader goals of sustainable development, as it promotes:
SDG 4: Quality Education – Ensuring inclusive and equitable access to quality education for all.
SDG 5: Gender Equality – Encouraging equal opportunities for both boys and girls to learn essential life skills.
SDG 1: No Poverty – Supporting education that can lead to employment and entrepreneurial opportunities, helping to break the cycle of poverty.
The donation will significantly impact both schools by allowing students to learn practical skills, encouraging independence, creativity, and critical thinking. The teachers expressed their appreciation for the support from Food For the Poor, recognizing how these contributions will enhance the overall learning environment.
Food For the Poor (Guyana) remains dedicated to supporting educational institutions and initiatives that promote sustainable development and improve the lives of young people across Guyana.
