In celebration of International Literacy Day 2024, Food For the Poor (Guyana) observed the occasion with a series of engaging reading sessions held at St. George’s School of Science and Technology and Tucville Secondary School. The initiative aimed to inspire young minds and emphasize the importance of literacy in personal and academic development.
CEO of Food For the Poor (Guyana), Ms. Andrea Benjamin, led the event at St. George’s, reading excerpts from one of her favorite books, “The Other Wes Moore” by Wes Moore. As she shared the powerful story of two young men with similar backgrounds but vastly different life outcomes, she encouraged the students to reflect on the choices they make and the power of education in shaping their futures.
Her reading not only captivated the students but also sparked meaningful discussions about life, opportunity, and perseverance. At Tucville Secondary School, Mr. Gavin Huntley, FFTP’s Accountant, shared his love for poetry by reciting one of his favorite poems. He connected with the Grade 7 students by sharing personal anecdotes and expressing how reading has played a vital role in his life. Huntley emphasized that reading goes beyond academic success; it opens doors to new ideas, fosters creativity, and helps individuals build a better understanding of the world.
“Reading is not just about passing exams; it’s about opening your mind and allowing yourself to grow,” Huntley told the students. He encouraged them to read widely and consistently, reminding them that literacy is a key tool for lifelong success. The sessions were filled with engagement and enthusiasm, as the students eagerly interacted with the facilitators, asked questions, and shared their stories.
The event provided a valuable platform for students to explore the joy of reading and reinforced the importance of literacy as a cornerstone of their education. Through these activities, Food For the Poor (Guyana) continues to promote literacy as a means of empowering youth and creating brighter futures. The organization remains committed to fostering education and personal growth in the communities it serves.
